The Giver of the Santas

Originally written on January 15th

I am spending this snowy morning taking down the last of our Christmas decorations. For those of you inclined to do so, judge away. I have my reasons, but this morning I know exactly why I chose today.

It has something to do with these Santa’s and the angel ornaments that cover my tree. Both of them gifts and traditions from my Mema Pat.

There is a reel circulating that reminds us that in 100 years we will be buried with our relatives and someone else will live in the house we worked so hard to build. Our descendants will hardly know us; after all, do you know your grandfathers father? The content is meant to inspire us to live each day. I hope it inspires me to pass on stories of impact.

And today, I am remembering the giver of the Santa’s. The day I chose to take them down, January 16, also happens to be the anniversary of the day God chose to call Mema Pat home 12 years ago. Chad asked me recently why I keep the tags on the Santa’s; I said Mema told me to because they would be worth something someday. A tribute to her practical Central PA roots, she was right. These are worth something someday …to her eldest granddaughter and hopefully, to my children’s children, too.

Here’s to our earthly legacies. May we be remembered for our impact and may it be good.
